The first SVU Team, back on 1999, Season 1.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (often abbreviated to Law & Order: SVU or just SVU) is an American police procedural crime drama television series set in New York City, where it is also primarily produced. In the style of the original Law & Order, episodes are often “ripped from the headlines” or loosely based on real crimes that have received media attention. Created and produced by Dick Wolf, the series premiered on NBC on September 20, 1999 as the first spin-off of Wolf’s successful crime drama, Law & Order. The show started its 15th season on September 25, 2013 and has aired 321 original episodes as of September 25, 2013.
That’s what Wikipedia tells you about what this great show is about. But if you ask me, I find that short.
In a “Series World” like we have now, we are used to have the same typical procedures, someone kills another, cops arrive to the scene, interrogate witnesses and suspects, find the murder weapon, arrest the guilty one and put him on jail. On between that there are some scenes here and there that call the attention but the essence is the same. So, to actually find a show that touches something else, something more deep and human, becomes a refreshing air. That is Law and Order SVU. Now, you are probably thinking “What is she talking about? Doesn’t she knows that it’s been on air for 15 years already?” Well, the answer is yes.
I know it has been on air since September 20,1999, when I was just 5 years old. But it didn’t die with the pass of the time, it didn’t become predictable or boring, in the other hand became stronger and adaptable to the era changes. Included fresh faces, changed format but kept telling amazing stories that related in real life with a lots of women and children’s life.
LOSVU is more than just another show about crimes and law, it focus its main topic on stories, but not just something a typical writer does, but stories than had been real for many people. They write something believable, something that someone that had pass through can definitely feels related to. Sometimes loosely based on true stories or inspired by them, always shows empathy towards people, victims. Something that other shows find difficult or impossible to achieve at all.
Cast&Crew puts a lot of effort on making it look real, till the point where sometimes you actually believe it’s true. Well written characters and developt story lines, strong scripts and dialogues. Good use of scenes and reasonable use of understandable legal terms.
In my personal case, I must say I wasn’t tied up to this show until I was completely capable enough to understand what It means. Which it means since I was about 12 years old, but is till now that I’m a grown up that got captivated and trapped by it. Maybe it’s because I know it’s not like other shows, or maybe it’s because I know it shows the reality of lot of women and children than suffered from violence and abuse. Whatever is the reason why It truly catched me up it only matters it did.
Today’s SVU Team, 2013, Season15
For me a good show depends not ony on smart creators, great writers, good crew and well choosen cast but the key is on the dedicated actors. Not just someone filling in for the rol but someone that really believes and cares about what it’s doing, someone that watches it not just as another job that needs to be done but as a goal that needs to be reached. That’s the case of one of the actresses that I admire the most: “Mariska Hargitay” An actress that became an active advocate for victims of abuse and domestic violence, and also created “The Joyful Heart Foundation“. But to talk about her I need another post exclusively for her. Just there is too much to say about her and her job and impact on society.
A purpose to be and an objective to teach. To have an objective on my mind for the show is definitely a key ingredient for the long time success reached till today. The story of how LOSVU was created and the amount of awards and nomination that both, the show and cast, had received proves my point. A show that touches hearts, with melting stories, moves people and cause tears. A different perspective to see Sexual Crimes and to understand the hard work that these especial detectives and cops make within the victims, sorry better say “Survivors”. A must watch, a definitely award winner and recognition prospect. A show that keeps living through the past of the years and that year after year keeps showing us the value of to care about our love ones and never forget that, yes, there’s still good people but also there are ill minds walking around us. We might not know them but we must be careful and wise. An over all, remember that even when we feel down outta there is still someone trying to survive and someone else trying to help them. So we muust be grateful with what we have.
Till next time,
